from down under.
Been busy of late entertaining some relatives from down under Australia that have come up over to our sunny island to participate in my Granny's 79th birthday (according to lunar calendar she's 80 though...for some reason). So anyway to heck with my normal diet and the eat all u can eat diet came into play... basically its an influx of local favourites such as
1. Char kuey teow
2. Carrot cake
3. Hokkien Mee
4. Ice Kacang
5. Durians
6. Crabs
7. Beef Hor Fun (geylang)
8. Frog's legs porridge (geylang)
Which is all very good and all, i mean it has brought me to realise that Singapore is indeed fortunate enough to have so much yummy food at our bequest...well kinda at least. Think about it for a second - from the chinese quarters we have favourites like Char Siew Fan... Chicken rice...beef hor fun... Duck rice...yong tau foo...ipoh hor fun...dim sum...the list is quite long man. From the malay and indonesian quarter we have nasi padang...mee rebus...mee siam...lontong...mee soto...mee bandung...curry puffs...satay...roti john... From the indian quarter we have the ever popular prata...murtabak...teh tarik....indian rojak....thosai....and NAAN!
Man...the list is so damn long...speaking of naan and indian rojak though, i had both of them sometime this week...naan at Khansama as usual...along Norris Road in Little India. The funny thing is that having been given some new publicity in the newspapers recently, it appears they are doing brisk business and have added several upgrades...One of which is the "uber romantic" blue lighting...which i have no understanding of? Its like so blue dabadee.... eiffel 65.... and at either end of the 2nd floor is a huge plasma screen tv screening best of bollywood mtvs.... and the best part is - the previously nonchalant and arrogant staff now have a new found smile for everyone....and it begins 10m from your table...it turned my salty lassi sweet.. Little india for those who have no idea, is near BENdemeer road. yea.
Then the other day i went out with me OGL(orientation group leaders) pals like Fuhan, Sammie, Anna, Vanessa, Dom, Sanny, Wilson to Bukit timah hill for a morning hike CAN U BELIEVE IT!well it was more gruelling than the last time i went with Jolin Fiong and co... walked for longer and on more treacherous paths.. after that we headed to Adam road for lunch..so u see...its about food . food. food. At adam we had prawn noodles, duck noodles, indian rojak.. and we were damn full. Thereafter fashionista boss fuhan proposed a trip down Arab street. wow. only we never got there cos we took da wrong bus and ended up..at LITTLE INDIA. once again. haha... so there we had some mustafa shoppin....and it was bloordy hot... warm weather la.
Talking about yummylicious dishes, i hereby take this opportunity to thank the person staying 4 blocks down from me who has been openly broadcasting that she is a very keen prospect and talent in the field of blood donation. See, the bus stop i take bus from is about 5 blocks down from mine . Meaning i pass by this blood donor block very often.. and frequently come across this particular spot where there is always a used sanitary pad to be found. Some pads are for helicopters to land...to demark the spot where the pilot aims to land his bird. These pads however seem to direct pilot flies where to land. So picture this busy scene, a cosmopolitan city with sky scrapers that have helicopter landing pads on its roof. Many, many pilot flies or flielots encircle the landing pad, trying to touchdown safely. The key difference, is that in normality pilots land safely to avoid any bloodshed. In this abnormality the flielots are aiming for blood. The question to ask, is why the hell is there always a used pad in more or less the same area!? I often suffer from motion sickness if i were to travel in a plane or helicopter, since we are in this context. So similarly, i feel sick everytime i pass this helicopter landing pad.period. What is the blood donor thinking of? What goes through her mind, or lack thereof, to throw her pads out of the window a la fair dames and ladies throwing down garland after garland and stalk after stalk of flowers at the victorious solitary gladiator in the arena having defeated every other bafoon? I say, the villain is Whisper. Say it softly please. The villain is whisper. Give it WINGS, they said. It'll be a BLAST, they said. It'll FLY off the shelves, they said. ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES won't even be felt - its so comfy, they said. BLOOD DONOR said, "Maybe it will glide like a majestic eagle soaring through the open skies, wings spread to its maximum span in all its glory!" So it is my conjecture that this blood donating fool has been throwing out the bloody (in all sense of the word) pads out of her window to see if the wings take flight. Not once, not twice, but many many times. After all, the Wright brothers didn't succeed the first time...After all, failure is the mother of success. And until blood donor becomes a mother i suppose the wings won't cease appearing along the void decks of my otherwise serene walks to the bus stop. Yes, my relatives are here from Australia. But unlike some other things that keep coming back from down under, they're going back this sunday.
